Farnworth Social Circle vs Lowerhouse

Lowerhouse’s pre-season preparations got off to a sluggish start on Sunday afternoon as they were comprehensively beaten by an impressive Farnworth Social Circle side.

The Bolton league side batted first and after negotiating a couple of early maidens began scoring runs with relative ease. Rees was the main danger as he punted boundary after boundary and eventually retired after reaching his century in 67 balls. Hawke had the best return out of all the bowlers with 3/65 off 13 overs. Other experienced bowlers were punished (Martin went for 27 off 4 overs and Bailey went for 49 off his 9 overs). Stand in captain Ben Heap. however, managed to inject some damage limitation with a couple of wickets late on but the home side still ended up on a more than respectable 216/7 off their 40 overs.

In response, the visitors threatened to sparkle early on by going at 4 runs an over in the first 4 overs but couldn’t continue this momentum. Josh Lavin went for 6 to a slightly harsh LBW decision. Heap (23), Whittaker (15) and Joe Martin (32) did thier best to try and keep up with the required rate but didn’t have anyone at the other end backing them up to help create a meaningful partnership. The young tail enders of Woodall and Ridehalgh were unable to see out the overs as Lowerhouse limped to 106 all out with 8 balls remaining. It should be remembered that this team didn’t include Bleazard, Cottam, Edgar, Walker and Whitehead (all unavailable for various reasons) and was slighter weaker because of it. All are back in the squad for next weekend’s double header against Stand (friendly) and the league opener against Church where we will have our very best team on the field.

Joe Martin was named MOM for his 3 catches and 32 runs.
